Since 1916, the U.S. National Park Service has been entrusted with the care America's National Parks, as well as our historic and natural landmarks, and national heritage areas.

Many of our natural parks contain historic places that represent important aspects of that history. Collectively, these places present an American history textbook, a that educates visitors about the people, events, buildings, objects, landscapes, and artifacts of American History.

With the help of volunteers and park partners, the National Park Service safeguards thousands sites that have been set aside as symbols and evidence of our history and prehistory.

Currently there are:

2,461 national historic landmarks
582 national natural landmarks
400 endangered species
397 national parks
40 national heritage areas

With these hundreds of historic sites, stay tuned, as this list of historic travel destinations grow.
