(May 16, 1863) - Also called the Battle of Baker's Creek, this large
conflict led by
Major General Ulysses S. Grant and
John C. Pemberton took place in Hinds
County. Following the
Confederate and Federal forces made plans for future operations.
Confederate General Joseph E. Johnston retreated, with most of his
army, up the Canton Road; but, he ordered Lieutenant General John C.
Pemberton, commanding about 23,000 men, to leave Edwards Station and
attack the Federals at Clinton.
