The American Tradition of Thanksgiving

The first Thanksgiving in 1621

The idea of celebrating the harvest pre-dates the Pilgrims with origins that can be traced back to the Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans. Even Native Americans annually celebrated their harvest long before Europeans or the Spanish ever arrived on the North American Continent. Read more about America’s Thanksgiving Tradition.

Did You Know?

Seneca Chief Red jacket of the Iroquois league

Many historians believe that the United States Constitution was partially modeled after the Great Law of Peace, the constitution of the Iroquois Confederacy. In 1988, the United States Congress passed a resolution to recognize the influence of the Iroquois League upon the Constitution and Bill of Rights. See More Native American Facts and Trivia HERE

Susan LaFlesche Picotte, Nebraska State Historical Society.

Susan La Flesche would become the first Native American in the United States to receive a medical degree as a doctor. The “super-highway,” as it was thought of in 1926, represented unprecedented freedom to travel across the American West. Spawned by the rapidly changing demands of America, entrepreneurs, Cyrus Avery of TulsaOklahoma and John Woodruff of SpringfieldMissouri conceived of the grand idea of linking Chicago to Los Angeles. No doubt a daunting task for the pair, the federal government finally pledged to link small town U.S.A. with metropolitan capitals in the summer of 1926,  and the American Association of State Highway’s designated the road as U.S. Highway 66 on November 11.  Read about Route 66 and begin your road adventure!

Bat Masterson – Loyalty in Lawlessness

Bat Masterson

William Barclay Masterson was born on November 26, 1853. Lawman, gunfighter, gambler and well-known Old West character, Bat was one of the very few who lived during the lawless days of the Old West who wasn’t there to make a name for himself, or to count the notches on his belt. He was actually a genuine and honest man, who didn’t have a reputation for violence, but, was loyal to the end, in defending his friends. Read about this fascinating character HERE.
