Fort Union Santa Fe Trail Ruts
- Text
on back: Fort Union National Monument,
New Mexico. New
Mexico's Fort Union Monument was established to preserve
this historic military depot on the
Santa Fe
Trail. Used
continually from 1821 until 1880, the 900-mile trail was a
major trade route that brought an estimated 2,000 wagons
west each year. Shown here is one of the many eroded remains
of the Mountain Branch near Fort Union. Though longer and
more rugged than the Cimarron Branch, many chose this route
because of readily available water and fewer problems with
the Native Americans along the way. Postcard is new, unused
and in mint condition.
