Nicodemus, Kansas PostcardNicodemus - 1885 - Text on back - Nicodemus National Historic Site, Kansas. View of Washington Street, Nicodemus in 1885. Founded in September, 1877, Nicodemus already consisted of about 300 Black settlers. By the mid-1880's, Nicodemus had been transformed into a prosperous town. They boasted of two newspapers, three general stores, at least three churches, a number of small hotels, one school, literary society, ice cream parlor, a bank, a livery, numerous homes and more. Postcard is new, unused and in excellent condition.

This area preserves, protects and interprets the only remaining western town established by African Americans during the Reconstruction Period following the Civil War. The town of Nicodemus is symbolic of the pioneer spirit of African-Americans who dared to leave the only region they had been familiar with to seek personal freedom and the opportunity to develop their talents and capabilities. Text on back: Kansas has many claims to fame, including a long history of pre-Civil War battles when it was first labeled the "Free State," as well as unparalleled Old West legacies in its many cowtowns, Native American history, and along the historic westward trails. Though most perceive Kansas as being "flat as a pancake," it actually rises in elevation some 3,300 feet from the Missouri border to the Colorado border, and off the beaten path, can be seen hills and valleys, unique rock formations, and six scenic byways.
