in Union Oil Company's Natural Color Photographic Scenes of West. Most recent volcano on the continent. Mt. Lassen erupted for the
first time in white man's history in 1914 and remained in a
turbulent state until 1921. It reached its present eminence
of 10,453 feet through a series of lava flows. Today the
area is a beautiful and interesting national park. See the

Death Valley - Racetrack - Text on back: Death
Valley National Park. The Racetrack in Death Valley is an ancient lake bed
in the shape of an oval. The playa’s surface is broken by a giant rock
outcropping called the Grandstand. This exposure, which has the North Star
positioned over the Grandstand, was first exposed for 40 minutes under the
setting moon to light the landscape. The stars were then exposed for 6

Valley - Floor - Text on back: Death Valley
National Park. The floor of Death Valley is an ancient lake bottom left
exposed by the deserts arid climate. A lake 30 feet deep existed here only
2000 years ago. Salt precipitated from its drying waters, forming a layer
that is from 3 to 5 feet thick. Below this is at least 1000 feet of
alternating layers of salt and rubble representing deposits from other

Valley National Park. Along Artist’s Drive in Death Valley National Park
is Artist’s Palette. Here, oxidation has produced a rainbow of colors in
the eroded clay deposits of ancient lake bed sediments. Iron oxides
produce violet, yellow, red, brown, and black. Green is usually caused by
copper or the breakdown of mica.

Valley - Sand Dunes - Text on back: Death Valley
Sand Dunes. A variety of sparse vegetation anchors its roots into the sand
dunes of Death Valley, seemingly immune to the constantly changing
structure of its habitat. Most situate themselves between the dunes where
they can reach water more easily and are sheltered from the high winds.
