Gambling in Reno, Nevada, 1910

This image available for photographic prints HERE.

Ironically, Nevada was one of the first states in the West to totally make gambling illegal in 1909. However, this didn't seem to stop this popular gambling house in Reno from doing a brisk business in 1910.

However, Nevada did stop the gambling statewide, for the next two decades. However by the time construction on the Hoover Dam was underway in 1931, Nevada had once again relaxed its gambling laws and casinos once more began to flourish.

Before the 1960s, Reno was the gambling capital of the world, but Las Vegas' rapid rise and the growth of Indian gaming in California reduced Reno's business.
