The Liberty Bell Slot Machine

Liberty Bell Slot Machine

This image available for photographic prints HERE.

The first gambling machine, developed in 1891, was based on poker and contained 5 drums holding a total of 50 card faces. In no time, the machine proved to be extremely popular as customers inserted a nickel and pulled the lever.  At this time there was no direct payout mechanism, so gambling establishment usually paid in cigars or drinks. To increase the house odds, two cards - the Ten of Spades and the Jack of Hearts, were typically removed from the "deck," cutting the odds of winning a Royal Flush in half.

The first slot machine with a direct payout was invented in 1887 by

Charles Fey of San Francisco, California who wanted to

devise a simpler automatic mechanism. Fey's slot machine had three spinning reels, with diamonds, spades, hearts and one cracked Liberty Bell painted around each reel, which gave the machine its name.
