Telluride, Colorado got its start when gold
was discovered in the area. The first claim was made in 1875 and before
long, a mining camp was born and the town was officially established in
1878. Because of its isolated location, the town grew slowly until a toll
road was opened in 1881, which allowed wagons to go where only pack mules
could go before. This increased the number of people in Telluride, but it
was the railroad that arrived in 1890 that really allowed the town to
prosper.
Telluride's mines were rich in zinc, lead, copper, silver, and, of course,
gold.
