Revives the History of the American West on the World Wide Web
What started out as
a hobby for a Kansas City area woman has turned into a travel website and
then some. Legends of America
(www.legendsofamerica.com)
is full of facts and fancy about destinations in the American West.
Kathy Weiser began the site in July of 2003 with information on northeast
New Mexico, but it quickly expanded to include over 900 pages of outlaws,
treasure tales, ghost towns and more, covering nine states so far,
including Kansas and Missouri. "Perhaps I was born during the wrong time,
or maybe I'm just an ‘old soul’, but whatever the reasons, I have always
been nostalgic”, Weiser says. "By searching for answers in museums,
ghost towns, libraries, cemeteries, and a little folklore from the locals,
I piece together a picture of the past. Only then, is my travel
adventure complete.”
Legends of
America.com has revived the American West with
in-depth articles on everything from Black Jack Ketchum to Colorado mining
days, the Missouri-Kansas border war to Jesse James, and most recently, an
ongoing trip along Mother Road 66. This wonderfully reflective
website is rich with history, fun, and even surprises. Whether its
tales from Moreno Valley, New Mexico or ghostly legends of the
Independence, Missouri jail, readers are finding hours of enjoyment, facts
about those small out of the way hidden attractions, and treasure hunting
tips to boot. For those frustrated with the "information snippet” society
we live in, Legends of America.com focuses on travel destinations
that appeal to the nostalgic and historic minded, giving more than just a
paragraph, it takes them there. Photographs of then and now give the
reader a better perspective of what once was, with stories written in a
down home style that draw them in even more. Even old west recipes
are sure to please, providing a literal taste of the old west.
Weiser is surprised with
the response so far, saying "The number of hits to my site has snowballed,
going from hundreds a month to thousands a day. I think what people
like most is the ‘folksy style’ and laid-back attitude. I keep
adding more and they keep coming back.”
In addition to a wealth
of information, Weiser also provides her readers with free screen savers,
free directories - where businesses can add their listings on-line, and a
newsletter to a growing list of subscribers, that features all manner of
lore and legends of the American West. Legends of America.com
