Great American Bars and Saloons
By
Kathy Weiser,
Owner/Editor of Legends of America
Kathy Weiser's first venture into the publishing world takes you into the
many watering holes of America's past, particularly the numerous
saloons
that sprouted up during our nation's
Wild West
days. This great
photographic review displays hundreds of
vintage photographs from
California
to
Arizona, the mining camps of
Colorado, all the way to New
York and its turbulent days of
Prohibition.
Hardcover, 2006, 224 Pages.
Signed by the author!!
Boothill
by Robert J. Randisi
"They died with
their boots on." So goes the old cliché that sums up the untimely demise
of many a man in the wilder towns of the Old West - and no town was
wilder, or home to more untimely demises, than the ultimate City of Sin,
Dodge City. The overcrowded cemetery in Dodge was known as Boot Hill, and
it was filled with some of the wildest characters in American history. In
this remarkable anthology, Robert Randisi has collected the most
successful Western authors currently writing to create a short story
collection that tells the stories of Boot Hill - from the coffin-maker
with a death wish to the drunken cowboy haunted by one night of greed and
violence, to the vigilante piano man and the tough-talking soiled dove.
The Haunted Horse of Gold Hill
by Calamity Jan
Why is the mysterious mustang colt
circling the tombstone on the outskirts of Gold Hill, Nevada? What haunts this
small, wild horse that has been sighted for over a hundred years?
Twelve-year-old Paige, and her best friend, Meggie are determined to find out,
but a teenage drifter named Brooks involves them in an even more perilous web of
high-stakes danger and intrigue. Is this ranch hand a mustanger involved in an
illegal horse smuggling operation intent on capturing the wild horses? The
Ghostowners soon find out.
The
Real Wild West by Michael Wallis
Although not as renowned as
Buffalo Bill
Cody, Joseph Miller and his brothers were in many ways as impressive
as impresarios. Their Wild West shows, which competed with
Cody's
show and the Ringling Brothers' circuses, featured talent like Will Rogers
and Tom Mix and significantly influenced American mass entertainment. In
The Real Wild West, Michael Wallis makes a case that the Millers
didn't just invent the romantic West but lived it as well. Like
Cody
before them, the Millers took their cues from the frontier, largely
because they played a significant part in its conquest.
New - soft back.

The Age of Gold
by H.W. Brands
The gold rush of 1848 was a watershed in American history, helping mold
the country into its modern shape, transforming the wilderness and pushing
the country into civil war. Noted biographer Brands (his life of Benjamin
Franklin, The First American, was a Pulitzer finalist) makes good use of a
sparkling cast of characters: George Hearst, Leland Stanford, Levi
Strauss, even William "War Is Hell" Sherman, all raced to California to
make their fortunes. For most of the hundreds of thousands who flocked to
California, though, life in the mines of the Sierras was hard and rarely
paid off. Yet the hopeful kept coming not only from the East but from
around the world, with profound implications for California and the rest
of the country.
Central
City and Gilpin County
by Robert L. Brown
Gold brought people to
Colorado in
the mid-1800s and
Central City
and its environs became known as "The Richest Square Mile on Earth."
Gilpin County soon evolved, with a population that sometimes approached
40,000, and
Central City became the second largest community in
Colorado.
This book, with scores of "then and now" photographs, tells the story of
this remarkable area, its towns, its mines, and its people. New - softback.

Heartland
- Prairie Portraits and Landscapes by Ottmar Biergwagon & Mark Abley
Writer
Mark Abley describers this collection of photographs of Ottmar Bierwagen.
Includes 99 color plates which present the grit and beauty of Canada's prairies
and foothills, and of their people. Rich and appealing in form and color, his
photographs are also revealing and evocative of the people and places they
portray -- from a small town main street, to an open, rolling wheat field, to a
rowdy crowd ad the chuckwagon races. Used, very good condition, hard back.
Brave
Men In Desperate Times by John McKay
Brave Men In
Desperate Times tells the stories of stories of twenty-one ordinary Civil
War solders-men who, by and large, have never had their stories published
until now. These vivid, eyewitness accounts culled from battle reports,
muster rolls, museum collections, family stories, and a handful of letters
and diaries that have survived are a testament to the sacrifice, honor,
and service of these courageous men.
