The
Greatest Treasure-Hunting Stories Ever Told
by Charles Elliott
Recapturing the essential romance of classic stories, many of the tales
are true - or purport to be. They encompass all the great themes --
obsession, tragedy, danger, crime, frustration and terrible physical
challenge, success and disappointment. They take place under the
sea, in jungles, on desert islands, even in the attics of old houses.
The treasure itself is not always gold and silver and diamonds -- it may
be lost documents, the solution to a historical puzzle, or an unexpected
archaeological discovery. What is common to them all is the
excitement of the chase and the possibility -- irrational, perhaps, but
unavoidable -- that
treasure
really is there for the finding. Hardbound, 292 pages.
Preserving
America's Past, by National
Geographic
Across the land fragments of the past come to life: A 75-year-old
pilot lifts off in a "quivering birdcage" designed when he -- and the air
-- age were in childhood. Apprentice shipwrights in Maine shape the
subtle curves of wooden workboats. Amid the teeming granary of Iowa,
a farmstead recaptures the mid-19th-century days when settlers raised log
houses and hired roving sodbusters with giant plows to turn the stubborn
turf. Preserving America's Past records these rich and varied
fragments of history, as well as dozens of others from historic cities, to
vintage cars, sailing ships, and prehistoric crafts. Hardback, 1983
- 199 full color pages, used, book is in excellent condition with all
pages intact, book cover shows wear. Only 1 copy available. |

The
Vanishing American Frontier, by Jake Milgram Wein
This
book illustrates the paintings and drawings of Bernarda Bryson Shaun who
worked for the Public Works of Art Project and later created these
beautiful pieces of work for the Resettlement Administration of Franklin
Delano Roosenvelt in 1935-1936. These artworks are a great
compliment to the many vintage photos from the same era which are on our
website.

Chariots
of the Gods, by Erich Von Daniken
All
over the world there are ruins and improbable objects which cannot be
explained by conventional theories of archeology or religion. But
supposing you look at them in the light of today's knowledge about space
travel. A remarkable consistency emerges. They suggest the
appearance of beings from other planets in prehistoric times and pose the
question - Was God an Astronaut? Hardbound, copyright, 1968 Used,

Butch
Cassidy Was Here - Historic Inscriptions of the Colorado Plateau
by James K. Knipmeyer
From overpass walls to bathroom stalls, we humans can’t seem to pass up an
opportunity to leave some evidence of our passing through. This urge is
hardly a contemporary phenomenon and the beginnings of such activity date
back beyond the beginnings of written language. Spanish missionaries
and colonizers, Mormon pioneers, amateur archaeologists, outlaws, miners,
and pack mail carriers all have left their mark on southwestern
history—their names and dates scratched into rock with knives; carved with
chisels; painted on with axle-grease from a wagon, a fire blackened stick,
or even the lead of a bullet. Knipmeyer gathers them all together in a
narrative survey of the West brought vividly to life with over 200
photographs. |

Preserving
the Great Plains & Rocky Mountains by
Elaine Freed
We
are all too familiar with the look of modern America: the suburbs, the
strip malls, the glass office towers, and - especially in the West -- the
prevalence of urban sprawl. The area covered by this book
includes
New Mexico,
Colorado,
Texas,
Oklahoma,
North
and
South Dakota,
Kansas,
Nebraska,
and
Wyoming, a
vast and varied section of the country with remarkably diverse geography.
Elaine Freed has covered huge amounts of territory to present this lively
and well-illustrated study of the architecture and the preservation
history of the great Plains and Rocky Mountain West. Large paperback, over
400 pages. |
