An exhibit at the Corinth Civil War Interpretive
Center displays the work of a soldier building a fortification. Extensive
fortifications were constructed around
Mississippi
in 1862, first by the
Confederates
and later by
Union
troops. The offensive entrenchments employed by
Union
soldiers
under Major General W. Henry Halleck marked one of the first times these techniques were used on such a grand scale.
