SITES AND ATTRACTIONS

Avalon Theatre on Main Street.

Devil's Rope Museum/Texas Route 66 Exhibit Route 66 and Kinsley Street. Devil's rope means barbed wire. The Devil's Rope Museum features the history of barbed wire, its artifacts, the significance of the invention, and the impact on the development of the Old West. The museum also features information about Texas Route 66, the City of McLean and other nearby areas. The museum is also the headquarters of the Texas Historic Route 66 Association and the first mother road museum on the route. 806-779-2225, 100 S. Kingsley Street at the east end of downtown. Hours: April 1 - October 31: Tues - Sat 10:00 a.m to 4:00 p.m., Sun 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.; November 1 - March 31: Thurs, Fri., Sat. 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Sun 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Lake McClellan – 12 miles west of McLean. This small 325 acre lake is sometimes referred to as the “Paradise of the Panhandle” due to its dense woods, abundant bird life, white-tailed deer, and excellent fishing opportunities. The Park provides picnic areas, camping with RV hookups, boat ramps, swimming, fishing for black bass, crappie, blue cat, and hybrid white/stripers. Take I-40 west of McLean to FM-2477, exit 128 toward Lake McClellan road. Follow north for 3 miles to Park.

McLean/Alanreed Area Museum -- Located at 116 Main Street in McLean, the museum displays a prison stockade showing many original photographs of the Internment Camp and a variety of souvenirs and artifacts. One large notebook contains stories and history written by Americans who worked at the camp. A second notebook contains stories and correspondence from former German prisoners. (806) 779-2731.

McLean Permanent Alien Internment Camp – Located two miles east of McLean on I-40 at exit #146,  one mile north on County Line Road 5280. A Texas Historical Marker has been erected on a parking area telling the brief history of the camp. The site is all weather accessible for cars, recreation vehicles and busses.

Restored Phillips 66 Gas Station – The first Phillips 66 Service Station in Texas, built in 1927, is located at 1st and Gray Streets on Westbound 66. The gas pumps show the price of gas at 19˘ a gallon!

Watch for great murals on the buildings as you pass through town!
