A
Sioux
man prided himself on his accomplishments in both warfare and hunting.
There were also avid sportsmen.
The
Sioux
gathered wild rice, hunted, and fished on their ancestral lands in
Minnesota, but when they moved on to the Great Plains buffalo provided
most of their material needs.
They also hunted elk, antelope, deer, rabbits, foxes, and
coyotes.
When hunting
buffalo, they would often ride up beside the beast and use sharp
spears to kill their prey. Other times
Sioux
hunters would chase or lead the buffalo towards a cliff or steep hill.
At the bottom of the cliff, the hunters would jump on the buffalo and
quickly kill them.
