Blackfoot
children, like those of other
Indian
tribes, were taught to watch and learn from adults from an early age.
While just infants, every effort was made to teach them not to cry,
lest they give the tribe’s position away to enemies. Then, as now,
they were taught their oral traditions and culture so they might pass
the stories to their children in the future. Small boys generally
played with miniature hunting tools and learned to hunt small game at
a young age. Girls played with dolls and miniature teepees, such as
the one shown in this photograph.
Today’s
Blackfoot
children are still taught their traditional customs and heritage, as
well as their native language.
