Like other Native American tribes, the
Blackfeet have a number or oral tales that they have passed down from
one generation to the next. One of the main figures in many of these
Blackfeet legends is Napi, which means "Old Man" in Blackfoot. Napi
was the son of Nah-too-si, who was the creator of the world, and was
sent to teach the
Blackfeet how to live a sinless and better life.
Napi was not only revered, but often prayed to. In the legends, he is
often teaching lessons through tricks or dangerous acts. Communication
between the
Blackfeet and the supernatural world often occurred
through visions or dreams. A number of ceremonies celebrated and
encouraged these visions, such as the Sun Dance.
