July, 2008, Kathy Weiser.
Built in 1896, this was the home and office of
Dr. Robert H. Ryburn who practiced in
Bannack from
1897 to 1915. A progressive man, Ryburn was the first in town to own an
automobile, which made the visits to patients a far easier task. Often,
those that he visited were unable to pay him in cash, and he would take
vegetables, chickens and other bartered goods in exchange. Over the years,
other doctors practiced in
Bannack
including Dr. Glick, Dr. Leavitt, who once treated
Henry Plummer for a gunshot
wound, and Dr. mary Babcock Moore, one of the first women to practice
medicine in
Montana.
When
Bannack
declined dramatically, Dr. Ryburn moved his practice to Dillon and over
the next several decades the home changed hands several times. Clara
Griffith, who bought the house in 1945, lived here until the 1960s.
