Old Route 66 Alignment in Vega, Texas

Vega Texas

An old alignment of Route 66 ends in Vega, where it  used to run out across the prairie to Adrian, Texas, photo  by Amanda Gay, November, 2008.

When Route 66 was first established, it ran north from its location near present-day I-40 on First Street, before making a left turn westward onto Main Street through downtown Vega. It continued through the small town before ambling out onto the prairie to Adrian. From 12th Street westward, the old dirt path continues for a little while but is no longer passable to Adrian. Today's travelers are forced to turn back to I-40 to continue the journey. However, out in the pasture north of the highway, numerous "ghost bridges" can still be seen, marking the old pavement.
