Route 66 through
Kansas is the shortest of any state at just 13.2 miles. However,
in these few short
miles, there is more of the
Route 66 experience than any other dozen miles on the
Mother Road. This short stretch of the road passes through three
small towns that provide a peek
at
Civil War history, the
Old West,
and the mining days of the tri-state area.
Kansas
66 was completely paved in 1929 and was
never bypassed by the Interstates that sidestepped so much of
Route 66. However, due to its somewhat
remote location, the road is not well traveled, except by locals and new
Route 66
enthusiasts. Though the road zigs and zags
along section lines, the route is well-marked and easy to follow.
Along this short stretch you'll see lead
mining history, numerous painted murals,
Route 66 icons such as the Rainbow Bridge and
Eisler's Country Store,
the remains of a
Civil War era fort, and even "Mater" from the movie
Cars at the new snack shack - 4 Women on the Route in
Galena.
