Scattered about
Amarillo
are more than 75 artistically displayed fiberglass quarter horses. the
city-wide public art display, called "Hoof Prints of the American Quarter
Horse," are the work of local artists, a project of the American Quarter
Horse Association, located in Amarillo. The association also sponsors the
the American Quarter Horse Heritage Center and Museum in
Amarillo.
The museum and these many life-size horse
statues celebrates Amarillo's long history with the horse. In the
1800's the horse was obviously the main transportation mode of the area.
Very little moved in or out of the city without riding on a horse's
back or being pulled behind a horse. Even after the railroad and the first
automobiles arrived, the horse remained a vital part of the local ranching
economy. Ranching is still important in the
Amarillo
and "real" cowboys can still be seen bounding about the city.
