GRANTS SIGHTS & ATTRACTIONS

Acoma Pueblo - This pueblo, known as Sky City, is the oldest continually inhabited city in North America. Sitting high atop a mesa, Acoma is home to the historic San Estevan del Rey Mission church. Take the opportunity to tour the pueblo, snap photos (with a permit), and buy authentic Acoma pottery.    Be sure to visit the Acoma Pueblo Museum while your there that features an expansive exhibit of Indian culture, pottery and agriculture traces history from circa 1400 to present day. Located at the base of Acoma Sky City, the museum is the perfect place to tour history and shop for hand-crafted Native American wares. Acoma is located 12 miles off Interstate 40 just East of Grants. (800) 747-0181.

Bandera Center Ice Caves - Cooling underground airflow maintains the perpetual mass of ice. Nearby, Bandera Crater offers a glimpse of how one of New Mexico's many volcanoes erupted.   Hiking trails along the rim with a 17-mile lava tube with ice cave. Located 25 miles southwest of Grants, New Mexico,  800-423-2283.

Bluewater Lake State ParkBluewater Lake State Park - Fishing for rainbow trout or catfish, camping, boating, and hiking are just some of the attractions. Just 25 miles west of Grants, you can enjoy this versatile vacation spot year round.  Bluewater Lake State Park is 28 miles west of Grants via I-40 and NM 412

El Malpais National Monument - Explore 126,000 acres of "Frozen Fire" containing some of the most awesome lava and sandstone formations on earth. This badlands district of expansive lava flows, surreal ice caves and towering arches is also home to eagles, deer, elk, and antelope. Located 10 miles south of Grants. 505-285-4641.

El Morro National MonumentEl Morro National Monument - The ruins atop the mesa were one of the "Seven Cities of Gold." Carvings and messages were left by Ancient Puebloans, as well as conquistadors and historic travelers on the famous "Inscription Rock."  42 miles southwest of Grants, New Mexico via Highway 53, 505-783-4774.

Grants Dinosaur Discovery Museum - Enjoy robotic dinosaurs in their habitat, hands on displays, fossils and casts. Located on Jurassic Drive. 505-287-5558

 

 

 

Laguna Pueblo - This pueblo was founded in 1699. Part of the attraction to settle here was the spectacular views and natural beauty that remains to be seen today. Be sure to explore the pueblo's centerpiece - San Jose de Laguna Mission. Visitors are invited to stop at Casa Blanca Village, a shopping center off I-40 that features a supermarket and several shops where Laguna arts and crafts can be purchased. Fishing permits for Paguate Reservoir are available at the Laguna Wildlife Conservation Office. Laguna Pueblo is located 46 miles west of Albuquerque off Interstate 40. (505) 552-6654.

New Mexico Mining Museum - Explore the mineral history of Grants, and historic mining town. Tour amongst Indian artifacts, geology exhibits and a simulated underground uranium mine.  100 North Iron Avenue, Grants, New Mexico, 505-287-4802 or 800-748-2142

Mt. Taylor - At the heart of Cibola County, rises 11,301' Mt. Taylor. Among the towering Ponderosa Pine, you'll discover nature trails, scenic vistas, and wonderful picnic spots. Nothing beats Mt. Taylor for year round recreation - hiking, mountain biking, running, cross country skiing and snowshoeing.
