GALLUP SIGHTS & ATTRACTIONS
All Tribes Indian Center - Located in the 1928 White Cafe,
that once catered to the
Route 66
tourist trade. Interesting stone carvings, finished jewelry, as
well as innovative use of stones such as charolite and lapis.
100 W. 66 Avenue, 505-722-6272.
Canyon
de Chelly -
This 89,849-acre monument within the Navajo Reservation displays five
pivotal periods of Native American culture: the Archaic, Basketmaker,
Anasazi, Hopi and Navajo epochs, dating from approximately 2500 BC to
the present. The park's most famous ruin is the picturesque White
House Ruin. Its construction suggests a connection with the highly
developed civilization at Chaco Canyon to the east. Most tours within
the park must be escorted by an authorized park service guide. Inquire
at the Visitor Center. I-40 west to Chambers, US 191 north
to Chinle. Follow the signs. P.O. Box 588, Chinle,
Arizona

Downtown
Gallup - Downtown
Gallup is
best enjoyed on foot in the 12-block downtown area bordered by
Route 66/Main Street
(north), Hill Avenue (south), Fourth Street (west) and First Street
(east). The greatest concentration of interesting turn-of-the-century
architecture, as well as most of the downtown trading posts and
galleries are located here, especially along
Route 66 and Coal
Avenue, one block south. Of special note is the former Rex Hotel (c.
1900) at 300 West
Route 66, which is now
the Rex Museum. Have a look at the appealing McKinley County Court
House, built in 1938 with the pueblo revival style. The Court House is
located at 201 West Hill. The finest example of the decorative Spanish
colonial revival style is the historic El Morro Theater, 207 West
Coal. (505)863-4131
Gallup Cultural Center -
This Southwest Indian Foundation project features a
Ceremonial Gallery, Kiva Cinema, Storyteller Museum, El Navajo Cafe,
